As a support to our consultancy and training work, we have a developed a number of resources for teachers and schools to help them when we are not standing by their side.
Our EAL Handbook, developed through our work with Peterborough City Council, has proved extremely popular with schools and teachers with whom we have worked in a consultancy capacity. It provides a step by step guide to implementing a strategy across the school for working with English as an additional language learners. It also provides a way of sustaining the knowledge when we are no longer working with the client, and for those who want to go-it-alone, it can be an extremely useful guide.
We’ve included a snapshot from the Handbook as a taster…
Developed by The EAL Academy with Peterborough City Council, the EAL Handbook has six sections. Each section begins with key messages about EAL support, contains links to free resources (including videos of teaching) and concludes with a brief summary.
As the contents pages show, the sections include:
- Welcoming new arrivals
- Teaching and learning
- Learners at risk of underachieving and intervention
- Leadership and management
- A full set of appendices, including key EAL resources and EAL support for teachers and leaders
Welcoming new arrivals covers admission and induction programmes and includes this new admissions checklist. It also has phase specific advice such as such as this one on Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 EAL support.
Teaching and learning looks at the need of both pupils new to English and more advanced learners and includes links to free EAL resources.
Learners at risk of underachieving and intervention covers the needs of refugees and asylum seekers, the use of the pupil premium and alternative qualifications at Key Stage 4.
Leadership and management covers key tasks and responsibilities, legal issues and the Ofsted perspective. Linked appendices include this lesson observation proforma.
A full set of appendices contains key EAL resources and EAL support for teachers and leaders. Included are resources for initial interviews, assessment, self review, observation and this summary of EAL Co-ordinator responsibilities.
