EAL and secondary science

Course Information

A half day course focusing on the particular needs of English as an additional language learners in the science class at secondary level. Promoting language development for English as an additional language learners within the context of science is a challenge and understanding how the language of science works is critical. The session will focus on collaborative, talk-based activities as well as useful strategies to address issues such as reading exam questions and teaching specialised vocabulary for science.

The course

  • presents and reviews interactive teaching and learning strategies for EAL friendly science lessons
  • provides ways of  reading and unpacking questions in science exams

Course leader

Catharine Driver is a consultant and trainer for EAL and Academic Literacy. She has wide experience of working in multilingual schools and local authorities across the UK and expertise in the collection and analysis of data to raise achievement at whole school and departmental level. Catharine recently worked as senior adviser for the British Council EAL Nexus project and is currently Secondary Schools Adviser at the National Literacy Trust.
