What the 2021 School Census tells us about languages spoken in schools
We sent a Freedom of Information request to the Department for Educational asking for data on all the different languages spoken in English schools. We found there are ten languages with around 40,000 speakers or more. Those languages reflect the mix of pupils from established South Asian communities and more recent migrants from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Later this term we will be sharing the details of the numbers of speakers of all languages at local authority level.
