Free webinars
We are running two free webinars in November. Join us at 4pm on November 16 for the next instalment of our ‘Changing the conversation’ series – Curriculum, climate and community. The following week on November 24 we will be talking to three schools with outstanding EAL practice who have won the Gold Award for the EAL Quality Mark as well as hearing about an excellent new book  Teaching EAL.

Resources you can access for free
The newest additions to the free resource downloads section of our website are:

  • >strategies for different types of newly arrived pupils
  • >the percentage of EAL pupils in each English local authority every year from 2016 to 2021

We also highly recommend these five wonderful free videos from Maslaha for parents of EAL pupils in English, French, Polish, Slovak, Portuguese, Punjabi, Romanian, Somali, Slovak, Sylheti, Turkish and Urdu.

What the 2021 School Census tells us about languages spoken in schools
We sent a Freedom of Information request to the Department for Educational asking for data on all the different languages spoken in English schools. We found there are ten languages with around 40,000 speakers or more. Those languages reflect the mix of pupils from established South Asian communities and more recent migrants from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Later this term we will be sharing the details of the numbers of speakers of all languages at local authority level.

Our six unit online EAL course, accredited by the University of Greenwich, is now in its ninth year. We will welcome the next cohorts on 15 November and 15 January. Email contact@theealacademy.co.uk to request a booking form.
