EAL Quality Mark
Celebrate your achievements!
It’s great to be rewarded for getting things right! Celebrate your achievements with the EAL Quality Mark programme.
The EAL Quality Mark is an award made to schools on their achievements in meeting the needs of pupils learning English as an additional language.
It is available as a bronze, silver or gold award, allowing schools the opportunity to re-visit the award and build on their practice over time.
Any school with pupils on roll who are learning English as an additional language is eligible to apply.
How does it work?
The EAL Quality Mark is based on a school’s self-evaluation of its EAL provision.
We provide step by step guidance and validate your findings through a half day visit from one of our team.
Schools will examine their practice in three key areas:
- leadership and management
- teaching, learning and assessment
- working with parents and the community
Your school will be evaluated on your ability to give all learners the opportunity for rapid and sustained improvement and to deliver an inclusive curriculum which promotes language development alongside learning.
On successful completion, we provide an award certificate to display in your school and the EAL Quality Mark logo which you can include in your literature and on your website.
We also celebrate the achievements of schools that do well on our blog.
Why should my school get involved?
Apart from the obvious benefit of knowing you’ve done well, this process will enable you to record evidence of your success, expertise and skills in meeting the needs of EAL learners. It will also assist you in identifying areas for further development through the school improvement process. You will emerge from this process with clear targets, plans for further
improvements and a great reason to celebrate!
How did it work at Eastover Community Primary School?
The school EAL co-ordinator, Lynsey Irish, said: “We initially carried out the self assessment for the EAL Quality Mark as we wished to have our efforts recognised and celebrated. We were amazed when we collected all the evidence of how much we have in place and our expertise. However, the Quality Mark did so much more than this. By exploring our practice in the three areas of leadership and management, teaching, learning and assessment and working with parents and the community we were able to identify where we needed to make improvements and establish clear areas for development and future plans. It was exactly what we needed.”
