History and geography academic literacy handbook
As a support to our consultancy and training work, we have a developed a number of resources for teachers and schools to help them when we are not standing by their side. Our history and geography academic literacy handbook has been developed through the work of EAL Academy staff with the assistance of colleagues at The British Section of the Lycée International at Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
We see oracy as crucial to the development of academic literacy. Some of the activities here, such as Sequencing and Justification and Transverse, serve the function of talk as a bridge to writing; they give the opportunity to develop thinking and practise the more formal and abstract language of writing. They will be additions to schools’ current oracy-rich practices.
We aim to make the process of writing as explicit as possible, from planning to final draft. Most of the resources here focus on the features of whole texts, such as essays. As well as using these materials, we would encourage teachers to write their own model essays and answers, which can then be used in a number of ways to support knowledge of how successful texts work.
A pdf copy of the handbook is available to purchase for £18. To order a copy please email firstname.lastname@example.org. Payment can be made by direct bank transfer or cheque (please note that we are not able to take credit card payments).
